Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park
Wind your way through walls of fossilised coral
- Aventura
Windley Key Fossil Reef Geological State Park was originally used by industrialist Henry Flagler over a century ago as a quarry whose stones helped to build the Overseas Railway. Today, it's a nature preserve and park available to the public for everyday use. As you walk the hiking trails of this park, you can see cross sections of Key Largo limestone, which is actually fossilised coral, winding its way up through the rock walls.
The quarry was used up until the 1960s to mine the coral, leaving behind paths through 8-foot-high walls. In 1999, it was established as a state park and offers easy hiking trails and picnic tables for an afternoon meal.
