Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport, also known as Fort Lauderdale Airport or FLL, is a major hub for passengers bound for nearby Miami and Fort Lauderdale’s cruise ship port. Found in Broward County, Florida, FLL is one of 3 airports serving the bustling city of Miami, about 40 km away. Less than a 10 km drive from the airport are the beaches, golf courses, hotels and city centre of Fort Lauderdale.

Typically, Fort Lauderdale Airport handles around 700 flights a day, with direct service to some 60 cities around the US. There are also several international flights daily between Fort Lauderdale and destinations in the Caribbean, South America, Mexico, Canada and Europe.

The airport has 4 terminals, with Terminal 1 (known as the Yellow Terminal) serving mostly international passengers, Terminal 2 (Red Terminal) that is home to a Delta Air Lines Sky Club, Terminal 3 (Purple Terminal) serving as the JetBlue airline operating base, and Terminal 4 (Green Terminal) that is the base for Spirit airline.

What are the highlights of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport?

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport serves not only sunseekers headed to Fort Lauderdale’s beaches for Spring Break, but also millions of passengers booked on cruise ships departing from the nearby Port Everglades. It’s also a convenient alternative for those wanting to visit Miami, which can be reached within a 30-minute drive from the airport.

FLL has all the features and services you’d expect at an international airport – dozens of places to eat and shop, free Wi-Fi service, mobile phone charging centres, car rental shops, luggage storage, and currency exchanges.

There’s a shuttle between terminals and a tram service linking all the terminals to the Palm and Hibiscus parking garages. It’s also possible to walk between Terminals 3 and 4 with the connected walkway. Frequent fliers should note that FLL has two airport lounges – Delta Sky Club in Terminal 2 and United Club in Terminal 1. While Delta Sky Club is open to members only, the United Club can also be accessed by passengers booked on United air flights who pay an entry fee.

What to do at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport?

Most travellers are keen to get out of an airport as quickly as possible, but there’s plenty to see and do at FLL if you’re on a layover or have some time to spare. You’ll find a good range of shops around the airport, including duty-free shops for international visitors, bookshops, Kids Works stores and a variety of souvenirs and clothing for sale.

Avid plane-spotters could head to the roof of Hibiscus Garage, the airport’s multi-storey parking garage that has been designated an official aircraft observation area.

You could also keep an eye out as you move through the airport to see the dozens of public art and design installations, including a quirky neon sculpture called Please Lose My Suitcase Full of Blues in the baggage claim area of Terminal 3. There are interactive Cloudscape sculptures in Terminal 1 that double as a fun play area for kids.
