Beppu is a spa resort city on the island of Kyushu, nestled between Beppu Bay and a backdrop of volcanic mountains, which offers over 2,000 onsen (hot springs) to explore. Some onsen are ideal for bathing in nutrient-filled water as well as immersing oneself in mud and sand with health benefits. Among the most famous of these onsen are the 8 Hells of Beppu, which offer dramatic landscapes. For the most part, these can’t be bathed in, but they are stunning to see, and each offers a different atmosphere. Some allow you to try food steamed right in the springs.
Mount Tsurumi to the west can be accessed by a cable car and offers spectacular views that make for super Instagram photo ops. Between hot springs, kids love to visit the Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden where you’ll encounter free-roaming monkeys. Families will also enjoy Harmonyland, a traditional amusement park with rides, food, games and a giant Hello Kitty.
