The location of Hotel Amaryllis in Thamel is fantastic. Its right next to where the craziness begins, but stops you from feeling like you are staying the hustle and bustle of the tourist section of Kathmandu. The Garden of Dreams at the end of the street is also a great way to take yourself away from crazy Kathmandu life.
The hotel itself was ok –– the staff are very keen to help in any way they can, but the hotel doesn't quite understand some of the luxuries western travels come to expect from foreign hotels. Breakfast is an interesting mix of coffee and eggs of your choosing (if you wish) alongside fried potato and spring onion or a type of pasta together with bread, fruit and muesli.
The rooms are a little small, but the bathroom is the most challenging. You could almost sit on the toilet while you shower. A few days of staying here were ok, but after that you will begin to crave just a little more space.
Next time I am in Kathmandu I would stay here again (the price is too good not to), but know the trade-offs you are making with this location.
