We arrived around 5:30 pm to be met by a very nervous receptionist who couldn't speak English; her husband was sitting nearby. We discovered we were the only guests in the hotel. After a 10 hour drive I lay down for a nap, my companion went for a walk around the small town. At some point in the next hour, someone entered my room and stole my computer bag including not only my computer, but some cash, and my passport and other necessary documents. The receptionist did not want to call the police, but we insisted. They arrived, were quite good, but we didn't get to bed until 4 am, which is when we finally left the police station. We agreed to let the whole matter drop if everything would just be returned - no questions asked, but no luck.
The receptionist was the only person who knew of our presence in the hotel, and she had seen my computer bag when I registered.
This event required the loss of a travel day as I had to drive 400 km back to Bratislava to obtain a new emergency passport.
Needless to say, I did not pay for the room, despite a small apology from the hotel administrator.
