One of the most fascinating historic spots on Lefkada is the Castle of Agia Mavra. It's located close to the island's entrance from the mainland and dates all the way back to the early 14th century, being built to offer fortification and protection for Lefkada from potential invasions.
The castle has undergone many trials over the years, burning down in the late 19th century and being bombed during World War II. Fortunately, many original features are still standing to this day, including the stunning Agia Mavra Church and many old medieval walls. Admission is free.

No visit to Lefkada can be complete without taking a stroll around the island's capital, Lefkada Town. It's home to some terrific restaurants, bars, and cafés. Lefkada Town's buildings are famously colourful, beautifully decorated and amazingly maintained, especially considering the town has suffered greatly from earthquakes over the years.
Many of Lefkada Town's winding, cobblestone streets lead down to the little harbour, where visitors can look out and admire the boats and shimmering waters, just off the coast. This is also where you'll find some of Lefkada's top seafood restaurants.

Some of Lefkada's best beaches tend to be very busy throughout the year, but Milos Beach is different. It's over on the northwest coast and is actually a little tricky to reach, as you need to hike along a little rocky trail to get there. This means that, unlike some of the more popular coastal spots, Milos Beach is often almost empty.
You can really feel like you have the whole place to yourself here, even in the peak summer months, and the beach itself is simply magnificent. A wide, open expanse of sand stretches out in both directions, backing onto cliffs and greenery, without any hotels, bars, or other man-made structures interrupting the view.

If you're looking to enjoy some watersports in Lefkada, Vasiliki is the place to be. Located down in the southern part of the island, this ever-evolving resort haven is developing a reputation as one of the top windsurfing spots in all of Greece. Oddly enough, the bay here is bordered by a tall valley with steep slopes, so it might not seem like a good spot for strong winds.
In reality, however, the wind really picks up in the afternoons, drawing in windsurfers from far and wide. In the mornings, it's a little calmer and quieter here, so that's the time to visit if you're coming with kids and just want to admire the views. There are some nice hiking trails nearby and some good restaurants down by the marina as well.

One of the most awe-inspiring sights in all of Lefkada can be found at Cape Lefkatas. The island was named after this impressive cape, which stretches out into the sea, just south of Porto Katsiki. Towering white cliffs dominate the view here, and it's no surprise that natives have been drawn to this beautiful spot for thousands of years.
There are plenty of myths and legends associated with Cape Lefkatas, including the story that the famous poet, Sappho, leapt to her doom off the side of the cape after being spurned by her lover. Myths aside, it's a stunning spot, blessed with wonderful views in every direction and home to the Doukato Lighthouse, which has been standing since the late 19th century.
